A sheriff’s deputy in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana has been placed on indefinite paid leave after being exposed as a member of The Proud Boys — a known hate group.
According to the New Orleans Advocate, deputy Brian Green was placed on leave after violating the Plaquemines Sheriff’s Office’s policy of engaging in behavior on social media that “negatively affects the public perception” of the law enforcement body.
On Green’s personal Facebook profile, he describes himself as a “Deputy Sheriff, Father, Proud Boy,” and his profile photo bears the slogan “TheWestIstheBest” — a popular Proud Boys slogan. The Advocate also published a video that showed Green taking the Proud Boys pledge.
“I’m Brian Green, and I’m a proud Western chauvinist who refuses to apologize for creating the modern world,” Green is seen saying in the video.
“Green’s decision to utilize the … uniform to promote the views of the Proud Boys, whose values are contradictory to the values and the vision of the (Sheriff’s Office), will not be tolerated,” Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Gerald Turlich said in a public statement. “[L]aw enforcement in general has an obligation to treat all people equally, fairly and impartially.”
As the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) pointed out in its profile of the Proud Boys, the group marched at the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Charlottesville organizer Jason Kessler is a former member of the group.
On The Daily Shoah — one of the apparently more popular anti-Semitic podcasts among the so-called “alt-right” — co-host Brian Brathovd admitted the Proud Boys was a deeply anti-Semitic group masquerading as something else to get credibility with mainstream audiences. In 2017, Proud Boys founder (and VICE Media co-founder) Gavin McInnes wrote in a post to the group’s website that the group was simply “a men’s club that meets about once a month to drink beer.”
“Let’s not bullshit,” Brathovd said. “[if the Proud Boys] were pressed on the issue, I guarantee you that like 90% of them would tell you something along the lines of ‘Hitler was right. Gas the Jews.’ ”
As The Guardian reported in July, the group has been involved in various clashes with leftist counter-protesters in Portland, Oregon at several political rallies organized by white nationalist groups.
“[The Proud Boys have] been open and very consistent about using violence as a tool,” SPLC researcher Keegan Hankes told The Guardian.
When contacted by phone, Green declined to offer a comment to Grit Post, but instead offered to email a statement after consulting with his attorneys. This article will be updated to include Green’s response.
