Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), the keynote speaker at an event hosted by a Muslim-American lobbying group, was recently named in a bomb threat.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently held its annual banquet at the Hilton Hotel in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, and invited Congresswoman Omar to speak. However, Omar was reportedly the target of a bomb threat an anonymous woman called into the hotel, who demanded that CAIR call off the event and disinvite Omar or invite potentially fatal consequences.
“What would you do if I told you your hotel was going to be bombed. That is exactly what’s going to happen if you allow the likes of Ilhan Omar into your hotel,” read a Los Angeles Police Department report of the alleged bomb threat obtained by celebrity news site TheBlast.com. “She is a danger to American society and your hotel. You are not to allow her foot into there if you value your own safety. Do not allow her in there. Cancel the event.”
Rep. Omar not only attended the event, but she addressed the several hundred Muslims in attendance, encouraging them to “raise hell” in the face of Islamophobic discrimination in the U.S.
“I say raise hell, make people uncomfortable,” Omar told the crowd. “Because here’s the truth. For far too long, we have lived with the discomfort of living as second class citizens and I’m tired of it.”
Ilhan Omar — a Somali immigrant — is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, with the other being Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan). The Minnesota Congresswoman is no stranger to attacks from political opponents, however. In early March, a poster at a table sponsored by the West Virginia Republican Party in the West Virginia state capitol showed Congresswoman Omar’s face next to the twin towers, implying that Omar was somehow involved in the 9/11 attacks.
According to TheBlast.com, the LAPD is currently trying to track down information regarding the cellphone used to call in the bomb threat, which was reportedly called in with a blocked number. No suspects have been named as of this writing.
