national anthem

President Trump, eager to show his patriotism on national television, just forgot the words to the national anthem on live TV.

Prior to the kickoff of the Alabama/Georgia college football championship game in Atlanta, Trump walked onto the field to join in the singing of the national anthem alongside the Zac Brown Band. However, when the camera zoomed in on Trump’s face during one part of the song, Trump is seen briefly forgetting the verse “What so proudly we hailed/At the twilight’s last gleaming.”

The fact that the President of the United States — who accused NFL players kneeling during the national anthem to protest racism in the American criminal justice system of disrespecting the flag and the country — couldn’t remember the words to the first section of the national anthem was not lost on Twitter.

Trump’s attendance at the College Football Playoff Championship is a rare public sports game appearance for the president, who has been at war with the NFL since last fall when he called former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick a “son of a bitch” for kneeling during the national anthem. Vice President Mike Pence left an NFL game last year at Trump’s request when players at the game kneeled during the anthem.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar will be performing at halftime. Lamar, who has been outspoken in his distaste of President Trump’s administration, could use his performance to make a statement in protest of Trump during his set. Trump’s visit to Atlanta was also met with protests outside of the stadium, where activists projected “FUCK TRUMP” onto the side of the Mercedes-Benz arena before the game. That same message was repeated by Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough while players were leaving the locker room to walk onto the field.
