Muslims

An anonymous flyer being mailed to homes in the United Kingdom is encouraging Britons to carry out grotesque acts of violence against Muslims on April 3.

The flyer calls for white residents of Europe to counter Muslim immigration to the UK by committing random atrocities against Muslims, and designates a points system for various acts. “Verbally abuse a Muslim” nets 10 points, throwing acid in the face of a Muslim is 50 points, and 500 points are designated for anyone who decides to “Butcher a Muslim using gun, knife, vehicle, or otherwise.” Burning or bombing a mosque is the second-highest award.

No group is named as the author of the flyer, and the only contact information given is for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service in London. British residents of London, the West Midlands, and Yorkshire reported receiving the flyer in their mailboxes.

Al-Jazeera reported that counterterrorism police in the UK are investigating the flyer as a potential hate crime, and that British Muslims are treating the flyer as a credible threat to their safety. No arrests have been made in connection with the flyer as of this writing.

“This vile letter campaign sent to Muslims across the UK has caused deep distress and alarm. We welcome the action being taken by the police to investigate this matter,” said Miqdaad Versi, the assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain. “Sadly it is reflective of hate against Muslims which continues to manifest itself alongside the rise of the far right.”

“Our elected officials need to stand up and take action against Islamophobia in the same way they have taken action to counter bigotry against other groups,” he added.

The significance of April 3 as “Punish a Muslim Day” was not stated on the flyer. However, it may be an obscure historical reference to the day when Louis the Pious — son of Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne — conquered Barcelona following a two-year siege that ended in 801, defeating Muslims (the Moors) who were occupying the city.
